While most children grow up playing with dolls and other toys, young Valerie Messika had a different interest- playing with diamonds. Inspired by the world’s favorite rock, Valerie switched from marketing and communications to join her father in the diamond business.
COUTURE: Number of years in business?
Valerie Messika: It has been 10 years since I launched my first jewelry collection. To celebrate this anniversary, I opened my own Fine Jewelry Atelier in Paris last year. The workshop has delivered a series of 10 sets, as a symbol of this 10th anniversary, dedicated to the queen of stones, the diamond.
COUTURE: What was your first job, either in or outside of the jewelry industry?
VM: After my studies in Communications, I started working for Chanel, in the Marketing department. Right after this experience, I decided to join my father and to work with him in the diamond business.
C: What led you to jewelry design?
VM: Since I was a little girl, my father used to bring home incredible diamonds, and let me play with them. I always said that he is a “wise young man, with the energy of a teenager, and a soul of an old man”. He explained and transmitted his passion naturally through the years. At the beginning, I created my own jewelry pieces just for myself. Some of my friends liked what I did and insisted that I launched more jewelry. So I started to design pieces for them as well. This is how everything began.
C: If you weren’t a jewelry designer, what would your occupation be?
VM: Probably an interior designer, I’m crazy about designs.
C: Favorite pastime?
VM: Going with my two little girls to our favorite parks in Paris, playing with them at home and going to a nice restaurant with my husband.
C: If you could go back to your past self and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?
VM: Trust yourself and don’t be afraid of your choices.
C: What gets your creative juices flowing?
VM: I get my inspiration from a lot of things, all the time. It is like gymnastics of the eyes! I am always looking for inspiration in my travels, through architecture, by walking in the streets and looking at people’s attitudes and styles.
C: At what time of day are you most creative?
VM: In the morning
